I found this umbrella a few weeks ago and printed it on construction paper, thinking Zara could do the watercolor resist project described with the template. However we wound up just making our own little project instead.
First Zara did a bit of crayon coloring, then she painted over the crayon with the acrylic paint left on a pallet from doing the picture frame.
Next we did an experiment with watercolors to observe how rain runs down vertical objects such as windows.
To do this experiment you will need a piece of watercolor paper on some paper towel (or other absorbent material) on a large tray with sides, some watercolor (or food coloring and water), and a dropper.
Let your child squeeze some watercolor along the top of the paper.
Lift the end of the tray with the paint and watch it flow down the slope! Repeat if you like, we did since it was so much fun!
We let our "rain" picture dry while we cut out the umbrella, then Zara glued it on. She also enjoyed squeezing the rest of the watercolor onto the paper towels and watching the color travel.
Easy and fun, my favorite kind of activities!
